BFA Kent State University
MFA Eastern Michigan University

Carrie Byington-Oei earned her BFA in fine art with an emphasis in fibers and textiles from Kent State University in Ohio. After moving to Chicago and working for custom bedding and window treatment companies, Carrie gained an awareness of the environmental effects and labor conditions of overseas textile production. In 2016, Carrie moved back to her native state of Michigan to pursue an MFA in studio art from Eastern Michigan University. Much of Carrie’s research and conceptual work while in graduate school focused on mass consumerism and society’s penchant for frivolity. During her time at EMU, Carrie had the opportunity to gain varied teaching experience by serving as Art Director at the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing, teaching ARTS101/Art for Non Majors at Eastern Michigan University, and substitute teaching in Lansing area school districts. Carrie has also taught numerous fiber art workshops in Lansing, and, the past two summers, has taught summer enrichment courses hosted by Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines.

During her free time, Carrie enjoys working on home improvement projects with her husband, upcycling and reupholstering furniture, and spending time with her two rescue dogs, Napoleon and Mr. Rocky Balboa.
